The Science Behind Ionic Foot Baths

It all begins with water - H20
A water molecule is composed of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. When the water molecule loses a hydrogen atom, the remaining OH molecule takes on a negative charge. These negatively charged ions are absorbed into the body and alkalize the blood and tissue.

An ion is a charged atom that has gained or lost an electron which creates a magnetic field capable of attaching to and neutralizing oppositely charged particles. These neutralized particles are then expelled from the body through it's natural excretory pathways.

Osmosis
Osmosis is a process that describes the movement of particles through a membrane from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. Nature strives for balance and osmosis is a perfect example of this in action. In this case, the higher concentration refers to the ion field set up by placing the array into the water.

Ionic Current
When the array is placed into the foot bath and submerged under water, the low level direct current electricity feeding the array causes the metals within the array to combine with the water and salts generating negatively and positively charged ions. You can "see" this happening when you notice the bubbling - this is the array separating the oxygen and the hydrogen within the water.

Ionic theory states the ions travel through the body attaching themselves to various toxic (out of polarization charge) substances thereby neutralizing their toxic effects. These toxic substances are then expelled though your bodies natural excretory pathways.

Bio Energy
At its core, the IonChi™ foot bath uses a proven scientific process to re-balance and promote healthy natural detoxification of the human body. The body's bio energy field is enhanced during an ionic foot bath session. Each person experiences the positive effects of ionic exposure differently.

CHI Ch'i or qi (pronounced "chee" and henceforth spelled "chi")
Chi is the Chinese word used to describe "the natural energy of the Universe." This energy, though called "natural," is spiritual or supernatural, and is part of a metaphysical, not an empirical, belief system. New Agers often refer to this energy as subtle energy. Chi is thought to permeate all things, including the human body. Such metaphysical systems are generally referred to as types of vitalism. One of the key concepts related to chi is the concept of harmony. Trouble, whether in the universe or in the body, is a function of disharmony, of things being out of balance and in need of restoration to equilibrium.

The knowledge of the treatment of Chi has been around since the beginning of medicine. The benefits however, were not realized by the western world, until recent times. Once available, these treatments were only offered in a clinical setting, at prices ranging from $60.00 to $100.00 per treatment. Now, for the first time, you can benefit from this amazing process that will restore your body pathways and enable your body to heal itself!

Scientific Research

The excerpt below has been taken from the article printed in CAM magazine in September 2005 and has been reproduced with the permission of Dr Sanjay Chaudhuri and CAM magazine.

The purpose of the pilot study was to:

1. Ascertain whether the Ionic Foot Spa & Bath has a scientifically measurable and reproducible effect

2. Answer the perennial questions.

2.1
What does the foot spa do?

2.2
How does it work?

2.3
What proof is there?

3. To learn lessons in order to create a fuller trial - e.g to create a dummy machine set-up that would reliably test a control group with the purpose of measuring and correcting for placebo effects.

The charge created by a Ionic Foot Spa & Bath medical array is minimal (– 1.7 – 2.1A) less than a fairy light. Therefore the scientific equipment we chose to utilise in our pilot study needed to be sensitive enough to measure the subtle physiological changes which occur immediately after a Ionic Foot Spa & Bath.

Methodology

6 test subjects aged between 18 and 70, consisting of 4 females and 2 males, undertook the following measurements before and after the 30 min Ionic Foot Spa & Bath session:

1. Heart Rate Variability using the Health Express algorithm adaptability scale

2

2. Arterial Stiffness Indicator using Cardiotrack proven in clinical trials at a leading London hospital

4

3. Blood Pressure and Pulse using an electronic meter which averaged 3 readings

4. Meridian stress testing using the Avatar electro-dermalscreening device employing the Energetix CMD 48 point probe protocol

3

5. Live Blood Microscopy phase contrast visual qualitative assessment using the Detox Doctor visual medicine protocol.

A a pH and redox meter were used to ascertain changes in the Ionic Foot Spa & Bath treament water and asked our test subjects to describe how they felt during and after the treatment.

The 3 control subjects were told they were to have a Ionic Foot Spa & Bath treatment. The foot bath was prepared with Saline to increase conductivity to 2.1 Amps and the array was surreptitiously disconnected from the power unit for the same duration as the test subjects. No comments were made during the subsequent testing phase. The purpose of the control group was to assess the reproducibility and validity of our test protocol, particularly the electro-dermal testing.

In order to standardise the study, we limited participants’ water intake to just 1 glass during the Ionic Foot Spa & Bath treatment and ensured that no food, tea or coffee was consumed 2 hours before testing.

Ionic Foot Spa & Bath are now looking to conduct a clinical trial to enable Ionic Foot Spa & Bath to prove that the Ionic Foot Spa & Bath machine has a detoxifying effect and gain a product licence. Ionic Foot Spa & Bath International Ltd contacted the MHRA in November 2005 to receive the medical definition of “Detox” so they could design a study to prove its detoxifying effects. As soon as we have the medical definition of the word Detox, Ionic Foot Spa & Bath International will begin clinical trials.
